Daria in studio (1).jpeg

Daria Loi an Italian participatory artist and designer with a track record in arts-based research and a passion for mixed media and interactive art. Her groundbreaking PhD thesis-in-a-suitcase has been widely published because of its unique art-based nature, inspiring numerous artists and researchers globally. With a focus on reflecting on contemporary and personal socio-cultural narratives through art, Daria’s most recent work explores her intimate experiences as a woman, immigrant and ex high tech executive.

Her latest solo show, titled "THEY SAID: workplace netherworlds and other stories," explored themes of workplace bullism, patriarchy, mobbing and betrayal – and the solitude, sadness and rage that comes with them. Besides having exhibited, presented and published her work in the US, Canada, Greece, Italy, UK and Australia, Daria mentors numerous emerging artists and innovators and is Arts Commissioner for the City of Oregon City. In her column for ACM Interactions, she writes about art, design, participation and technology. Daria is the founder and curator of Imperfecta, an art and design gallery focused on women artists and underrepresented creatives.

artist statement

As an immigrant that moved to the Pacific Northwest after a decade in Australia, my art practice reflects diversity in the stories, materials and forms I explore. With a passion for delving into contemporary and personal socio-cultural narratives, my work explores what it means and feels to be a woman, an Italian living abroad, an ex high tech executive, and a global citizen.

My design background and Italian upbringing deeply influence my work and, because of my arts-based research studies, my artworks – at times witty in appearance or even colorful – are rarely created with the pure intent of satisfying one’s eyes. I rather make one's mind think and one's heart leap.

I love working in 3D or with textures and my works incorporate acrylic mediums, found objects, fabric, antique paper, vintage photography, human hair and what I termed “3D lacing” (a lace effect that I create using a 3D pen). Mixed media enables me to reach out, offer layers, create shadows or conceal details, inviting viewers to see what is inside or beyond.

.....

I also love the art community and diverse types of artistic expressions. Because of that, in 2023 I left my high tech life and made my childhood dream come true, opening imperfecta, an art and design gallery dedicated to women artists and minority creatives.

I have the privilege to be one of the many artists in the gallery, and such a privilege means that I get to make art when I feel and want.
